{"id":17,"date":"2012-12-09T23:58:56","date_gmt":"2012-12-09T23:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/richjohnson.com\/?p=17"},"modified":"2012-12-09T23:58:56","modified_gmt":"2012-12-09T23:58:56","slug":"more-on-why-people-are-unhappy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/richjohnson.com\/?p=17","title":{"rendered":"More On Why People Are Unhappy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my last post, I shared some thoughts on why so many people are unhappy.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to continue that train of thought by discussing one of the biggest problems facing humankind.<\/p>\n<p>The human race is a very conflicted collection of beings.\u00a0 It seems that we are most happy when we are striving to achieve an objective.\u00a0 We happily work all day long in anticipation of reaching our goal.\u00a0 Time seems to fly and our labor seems more like play when we set out to accomplish\u00a0 that which we strongly desire.<\/p>\n<p>I am a woodworker and I can recall one project that I had designed and built that so captivated me that I worked over 24 hours straight on the project, skipping meals and sleep in the process.\u00a0 It was a joy to build and I found myself a bit down when the project was completed.<\/p>\n<p>Isn\u2019t it odd that, when we accomplish our objective, most of us are satisfied for only a brief moment?\u00a0 We then start looking for something else to accomplish or obtain.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how many times I\u2019ve heard people say, \u201cWhen I finish _______, or when I get _______, then I\u2019ll be happy.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s curious that I never see a look of contentment from any of those people, even though they accomplished their desired objectives.\u00a0 Out of this behavior, we can arrive at the basic premise that humans are happiest when working <strong><em>toward<\/em><\/strong> an objective.<\/p>\n<p>Humans are victims of inertia, that principle that says a body in motion tends to stay in motion, and a body at rest tends to stay at rest.\u00a0 The majority of humans seem to be most comfortable as bodies at rest.\u00a0 We tend to want to stay where we are, working in our same jobs, living in our same neighborhoods, eating our same food, all the while wishing for something else.\u00a0 Inertia keeps us stuck where we are.\u00a0 Inertia is the force that robs us of one of our greatest sources of happiness; progress <strong><em>toward<\/em><\/strong> an objective.<\/p>\n<p>Although we want something more or something different, we don\u2019t pursue it.\u00a0 This inexplicable force called inertia keeps us firmly cemented where we are.\u00a0 We may be miserable, we may be indigent or we may be in poor health, but it\u2019s what we\u2019ve been dealt and I guess we just have to accept it, right?\u00a0 er\u2026\u00a0 I don\u2019t think so and I\u2019ll tell you why next time when we explore the real cause behind human inertia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my last post, I shared some thoughts on why so many people are unhappy.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to continue that train of thought by discussing one of the biggest problems facing humankind.
